Dewbacks and Womp Rats

Description

An assignment for Brian Buniak's Basic Drawing II class at the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art. For this assignment we had to take two celebrities, one lady and one germ, and turn them into what Brian called "Anthropomorphic Caricatures" in a full color illustration using traditional mediums. Anthropomorphic Caricature, in this case, means putting the celebrity's head on the body of some creature or another.

In case I failed at the likenesses; I chose Alec Guinness (Obi-wan Kenobi), and the infinitely-hot Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia). I feel ashamed to use the cinnamon bun hair-do, cause it's pretty much a likeness fail-safe.

One might question the logic of assigning a full-color caricature assignment to a "Basic Drawing" class, but I suppose there are basics to caricatures, too! A fun assignment in the end, nonetheless.

I really wish I had scanned the pencils before I painted this, because I don't really think the watercolors do it justice. I would have liked to upload a tonal pencil piece on here for once.

Yes, alas... The ravenous, nihilistic force of evil we all have begrudgingly come to know as Time yet again corroborates its plethoric collection of bodies with but one more unfortunate, pathetic victim, balanced carefully upon the precipice of Time's festering, stinking cairn-like pile of rot and decay, only to wait there solemnly in unconscious defeated wonderment for the next poor soul, wallowing in its own self pities of a thousand shames and indulgences, to be tossed carelessly atop his lonely, blistered corpse, blocking from his eyes the only would-be rays of light from the sole, distant, would-be sun that his executioner's miasmic, spindly reach plucked from the very sky itself as if in an instant, depriving the surrounding wastes of any form of thought or hope for an end to the ever-growing mad hell that their grim, hungry ruler created simply by coming into being.

That was fun.

Anyway, I guess I'm pretty happy with the way this turned out, all things considered. The watercolors on Alec Guinness just did NOT want to cooperate, but I think Carrie Fisher turned out well.

For those of you being naughty and not keeping up with your Star Wars geekdom, Alec Guinness's head finds itself mounted securely between the mighty, proud shoulders of the indomitable Dewback (you may remember them from the scene in Ep. IV on Tatooine, where Luke and Obi-wan pass storm troopers riding giant green lizards), while Carrie Fisher is, well... she's just a womp rat.

2H mechanical on 2-ply smooth comic board, watercolors on top, along with some minor color adjustments in PS:CS3.

I plan on selling this as a print at an upcoming convention, possibly after it's undergone some touch-ups.

Sorry for the uber-long description.
NOT!

It's hard to find the words to clearly explain how much this piece means to me.
